Kalla kriget

- Had you been born on the other side of the barricade, you would have been a perfect Stalinist.
- I reject that statement. But... well...it might be. No, no. It might not.

Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci and former CIA Director William Colby

You make yourself ridiculous by thinking you can do anything. The world is divided in two. There are the communists on that side and on this side the free world. The Russians and the Americans, no one else. What are we. Americans. Behind me there is the government, behind the government is NATO, behind NATO is the U.S. You can't fight us, we are Americans.
Athens inspector Basil Lambrou, speaking to prisoners before torturing them, during the US-supported Papadopoulos dictatorship

No scenario has been written then, nor has it been written since, to explain why the Russians would want to conquer Western Europe by force or to bomb the United States. Neither action would have contributed in any tangible way to the Soviet national interest and would have hazarded the destruction of the Soviet state. The basic question was never raised, for the Cold War prism created in the minds of the diplomatic and military strategists a clear-cut world of black and white; there were no grays.
Harry Rositzke, CIA Analyst, Eastern Europe, 1977Rositzke: "The CIA’s Secret Operations", 1977, p. 15 / penpress.org 020529

We're going to become guilty, in my judgement, of being the greatest threat to the peace of the world. It's an ugly reality, and we Americans don't like to face up to it. I hate to think of the chapter of American history that's going to be written in the future in connection with our outlawry in Southeast Asia.
Senator Wayne Morse 1967

I hereby find that the following operation in a foreign country (including all support necessary to such operation) is important to the national security of the United States: Support and conduct paramilitary operations against Nicaragua.
President Ronald Reagan, 1981December 1, 1981 "NS Finding," (National Security Archive) / penpress.org 020529

In all my years in the Army I was never taught that communists were human beings. We were there to kill ideology carried by - I don't know - pawns, blobs of flesh. I was there to destroy communism. We never conceived of people, men, women, children, babies.
Lt. William Calley

I say one evil empire down... one to go.
Michael Moore, commenting on the fall of the USSR

The men who possess real power in this country have no intention of ending the cold war.
Albert Einstein

Jag vägrar att tro att det val man envisas att kräva av mig är något annat än valet mellan två avrättningsplatser.
Stig Dagerman om det kalla krigetOrdfront Magasin #7-8/2000
